France shows off tallest bridge

The world's highest road bridge has been inaugurated in southern France by President Jacques Chirac.

The Millau bridge over the River Tarn in the Massif Central mountains is more than 300m (984ft) high - taller even than the country's Eiffel Tower.

The bridge, which opens to traffic on Thursday, was built to clear summer traffic jams around the town.

The BBC's Paris correspondent, Caroline Wyatt, says the bridge is one of the most breathtaking ever built.

She says that with its concrete and steel pillars soaring high above the morning fog in the Tarn Valley, the construction makes a spectacular sight.

'Delicacy of a butterfly'

Seven slender piers support the roadway, rising into seven graceful pylons bound to the bridge with what look like cobwebs of steel, our correspondent says.

"The bridge is just on the clouds," Millau Mayor Jacques Godfrain told the BBC's World Today programme.

"The architect, Norman Foster, gave us a model of art."

Mr Foster said the bridge was designed to have the "delicacy of a butterfly".

"A work of man must fuse with nature. The pillars had to look almost organic, like they had grown from the earth," the world-renowned British architect said in an interview with regional daily newspaper Midi Libre.

Like Concorde and the Channel Tunnel, the bridge is Franco-British.

French construction group Eiffage - that built the Eiffel Tower - financed the project in return for the right to collect receipts from a bridge toll for 75 years.

The bridge is now a source of pride for Millau, which believes many more tourists will come to admire one of the engineering wonders of the 21st Century, our correspondent says.

The construction also removes a bottleneck at the town, completing a new motorway link between Paris and the Mediterranean.

The construction of the steel bridge - now weighing about 36,000 tonnes - began in December 2001, using innovative techniques.

From the north and south sides of the valley, the metal sections of the structure were assembled, lifted slightly and then carefully slotted into place on each of the supporting pillars.

Motorists are expected to pay 4.6 euros (£3.18; $5.60) for a trip across the bridge.

Do you like OBAMA?

I'd like OBAMA before but after I've read the article below i hate him. Read this article for you to see.

America 's awakening on the perils of outsourcing

Amid the ongoing debate over Outsourcing, a hot-button issue in the US, top Democratic Presidential hopeful Barack Obama has proposed denying tax reliefs to companies that ship job overseas but said that education system must improve to check the trend. At a campaign event in Iowa , the Senator from Illinois was asked to comment on the loss of jobs which are heading overseas. "... this is something that is a top priority.... We're not going to reverse all this overnight, but there are a couple of.. common-sense steps, that I think all of us can agree on. Number one, we still provide tax breaks to companies that are sending jobs overseas. Let's put an end to that practice," he said. "... we may not be able to stop a company from moving, but we can stop from providing him incentives to move" Senator Obama said. Apart from revising the tax code to save tax breaks for companies that invest in the country, Obama also emphasised the need to shift the economy, infrastructure and, most importantly, education to deal with the challenge. "...Number two, we've got to invest in the new areas that will produce well-paying jobs," the high profile Democrat fighting for the party nomination for 2008 said citing the energy sector where shifting from a fossil-fuel-based economy to a renewable-energy economy could lead to more jobs. "... Third thing, we've got to build infrastructure in this country. Everybody saw what happened with the bridge in Minneapolis ." Obama said it would take about $1.6 trillion to rebuild all the ageing infrastructure in the country. "Now, in order for us to get that money, we've got to stop spending, as I said, USD275 million a day in Iraq ." "The final thing we need to do is education. The fact of the matter is that, no matter how much we do in investing in infrastructure and providing tax breaks, etcetera, the single most important criteria for whether or not an economy is going to be successful in this new global world that we live in is how skilled our workforce is," Obama said. "Stop sending $8 billion a year in subsidies to banks and financial intermediaries on student loan programmes at the federal level. Take that $8 billion, cut out the middleman, and provide more grants and more low-interest loans for our students so that we can produce the engineers and the scientists that we're going to need for the future," he added.
